The ongoing judicial confrontation between Apple and Qualcomm reveals new details of the cooperation between the companies. In particular, recently it became known that the American chip maker has paid to the iPhone maker a major “incentive payment” in order to become the exclusive supplier of modems for Apple’s smartphones. This information was shared by CEO of Qualcomm Steve Mollenkopf.
According to available data, the amount of “incentive payment” was $ 1 billion. While Apple representatives noted that these funds were spent primarily to simplify the transition process from Infineon modems on chips from Qualcomm.
In addition, as part of the trial became aware of other agreements concluded between the parties. According to reports, Qualcomm could become the sole supplier of modems for Apple’s mobile devices in the first place because it gave Apple a unique environment – in particular, the supplied components with a good discount.
That is a good discount kept Apple from seeking additional providers, as is usual. However, some time ago kupertinovtsy has ceased to satisfy the conditions of cooperation and high royalties, which required Qualcomm. This became the occasion for a long legal war.
