Last spring aluminum giants Alcoa Corporation and Rio Tinto Aluminum announced the creation of a joint venture under the name of Elysis. The result of this collaboration was the initiative for the production of carbon-free aluminum. Apple is not left behind and invested in Elysis more than $ 140 million.
According to reports, the Alcoa Corporation has developed a completely new process in which coal is replaced with conductive material, instead of carbon dioxide using oxygen. This approach allows to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere during aluminium production.
After a year and half after the official launch of the project, the cupertinos were able to get the first batch of carbon-free aluminum. The company plans to use it in their products. However, what Apple needed carbon-free aluminium, not specified.
Representatives Elysis note that the commercial supply of “clean” aluminum only start in 2024.
