Earlier this month Apple entered into a settlement agreement with Qualcomm. This was done primarily in order to solve the problem with the 5G modems. However, sources say that the cupertinos have considered other options. In particular, Apple could buy from Intel business to produce modems for mobile devices.
According to sources, the parties discussed the possible purchase in a few months – negotiations began in the summer of last year. However, after Apple has stopped its legal disputes with Qualcomm, the talks stopped.
It is noteworthy that Intel decided not to sell its modem business (or at least part of it). Sources say that the chip maker has instructed Goldman Sachs to find a potential buyer. While Intel plans to sell, not only production capacity but also patents and staff.
At the moment the modem unit brings the company profit. According to some estimates every year, it brings Intel about $ 1 billion loss. Apple refused the deal, now such a large purchase may be of interest to Broadcom, ON Semiconductor, Samsung Electronic and Communications Unisoc.
