Today it became known that Apple stops signing iOS 12.0.1. This means that the owners of all compatible Apple devices will no longer be able to install this version of the mobile operating system. Now all the user has to choose only between iOS 12.1 and beta of iOS 12.1.1.
It is worth noting that nothing unusual has happened. Apple usually stops signing older versions of iOS in about 2-3 weeks after the release of a new build. That’s exactly what happened with OS 12.0.1.
Such a mechanism allows the cupertinos to solve some quite serious problems. First, Apple may struggle with severe fragmentation of its mobile platform. And secondly, the inability to install older versions of iOS has a positive effect on the security of Apple’s mobile OS.
As mentioned above, users are now able to update their devices, or to iOS 12.1, which was released at the end of October, or to install a beta iOS version 12.1.1. However, in the latter case, they will need a special certificate.
