This proves a new patent.
Apple has not abandoned the idea of creating an iPhone with a foldable screen and can release the device in the future. The US patent office recently granted the manufacturer the right to the patent, which describes the possible methods of adding a flexible display in a mobile device.
According to the document, Apple engineers plan to use a special loop and several layers of flexible elastomeric material to keep the display functions, but to make the device collapsible. The main part of the surface may be made of glass. Folded iPhone will resemble an ordinary smartphone, but the display will learn to open up, to turn the device into a kind of tablet. Something similar was developed by Microsoft, but the project, code-named Andromeda froze.
Apple filed a patent application in June of 2016. Probably, at this time, companies began to think about the possibility of the release of the iPhone with a large foldable display.
This is not the first patent, which describes a foldable iPhone. Earlier insiders reported that LG is working on a prototype flexible OLED display for the iPhone. Possible release date model with an unusual display called 2020. Note that the official confirmation of plans to release the smartphone in a new form factor yet.
This year we’ll see three iPhone models. Two will get OLED displays with the “bangs” and one more familiar design with Home button and frame around the screen.
