Work obzorschikom boring that you almost always know which smartphone will win in a comparison test. But here absolutely other case. S10e and Samsung Galaxy and Huawei P30, with completely different engineering schools, very steep and comes closest to the results. Except for a few moments.

Appearance and design

It seems that the era of “steal the iPhone design from X and stick your label” coming to an end — Apple is so behind the times with their smartphones, which neither Samsung or even Huawei is not like the IPhone in full.

Of course, these “fighters with system”, which does not SAG under fashion to sculpt the ugly cutout at the center of the screen, were only Samsung and Sony, but pole, as you can see, started to move towards each other — Samsung has started to mold cutouts in the screens, though not in the center, and Huawei have reduced the “Bang” in the screen to the minimum that is needed to cut normal fit selfie camera.

But “to be not to merge with the cursed company” — it’s not about phones, but about adolescent nonconformists. Huawei offers a small keyhole. Samsung — hole camera in the screen. So what is the something?

Objectively difficult to say. Closing my eyes, I would say that it is better, like Huawei. But look at smartphones and I understand that keyhole catches the eye more often than the “black hole” at Samsung, which, moreover, much easier to hide or beat Wallpaper.

The only drawback of the “hole” that the distance from it to the top and right edges of the screen are different.

However, all the time using a smartphone, I almost did not notice. It got to the point that, if necessary, to do a selfie, I did not even knew where to look. Although, when you turn on the front camera in its interface the camera is indicated by a short animation.

Huawei wins colours, Samsung — outstanding compactness and almost imperceptible notch in the screen

The second point is the fingerprint scanner. Both manufacturers did not sculpt it on the back of a smartphone. Huawei has placed the scanner inside the screen, as, say, 6T OnePlus or Xiaomi Mi 9, and Samsung — in the side power button, as until recently only did Sony (and later the Galaxy A7 2018).

Both not a fountain. The feelings, scanner Samsung works still better (works more often correctly) than the Sony Xperia 10 Plus, but still the accuracy is not 100%. Like Huawei. It turns out about the same in accuracy, so it is best to help to set and lock in the face.

In the end, however, you still get that option from Samsung works better (faster, fewer steps need to be made). Took the phone, pressed the unlock button (in the scanner) — that one will work. At Huawei, if the face not recognized — have to reach for the screen area with the scanner. But overall it is a moment of subjective.

An interesting feature of both smartphones, despite its premium status, has maintained a 3.5 mm headset Jack, but the FM radio of them have already been decimated. Well, about USB-C and say no — and how NFC is already a standard for smartphones at this level. And, here in both cases, the USB 3.1 so the files are downloaded unusually fast.

Besides the fact that Samsung has a slot for a memory card, it is even water resistance! Have Huawei it’s still some kind of “super-elite” feature, which is added only in the most expensive models. Which is a pity.

You can get used to any smartphone, but on first impressions the Samsung much more comfortable. Because it’s a real CD! With my screen at 5.8 inches in size it is the same as the Samsung Galaxy S7 5.1″ or 4 Xiaomi Redmi/Redmi Go with 5 inches exactly. Given the fact that all of the latest Sony Xperia Compact turned out to be very “on the fan”, another equally technically cool compact smartphone is just not there (the remains of the Xiaomi Mi 6 2017 year does not count).

Screen and interface

Huawei always prefer to spoil a younger version of the flagships of less quality screen, so the Huawei P20, Mate and 20 received a “tolerable” quality IPS-matrix instead of the standard high-end smartphone OLED/AMOLED. But now the times have changed, and so that all the characteristics of the screen of the Huawei P30 slightly ahead of the interface extension. For Koreans it’s a shame, because Samsung itself churns out screens at his court the factories, and certainly not cheap, the flagship would not waste time on trifles.

The result is that the Huawei screen brightness a little higher, a little better color rendition.

Both smartphones I measured in two modes — each of them has setting for more natural colors and brighter shades. The Samsung is a “natural color” and “saturated colors”, and Huawei is “normal” and “bright”.

The values in the table for both modes is given by a dash (for example, 343-352 brightness CD/m2 means 343 CD/m2 in the “natural color” and 352 CD/m2 in the “vivid colors”).

Honest and high-quality OLED display Huawei P30 is better than “sometimes bright, and sometimes it doesn’t” display the Samsung Galaxy S10e

In fairness it should be noted that the screen of the Samsung auto-brightness when it wants to automatics (after the rain on Thursday) can squeeze the wildest 800 CD/m2. It’s such a brightness at which the screen will be perfectly clear (like you would in a room with no light), even if you are lying on the beach in Egypt in the summer.

The problem is that:

This mode is activated on a limited amount of time

If the brightness is activated frequently, it will accelerate the death (burn-out) of the screen.

In certain conditions (almost discharged battery, “your sun not enough sun, so I lifted up the brightness”) automation may not give these 800 CD/m2.

In General, it turns out, as in the joke:

— Companion the ensign, and crocodiles fly? What? Who told you such hogwash told? — Comrade major. — Comrade major? Actually, they fly, but low-dwarf

So do not count.

However, there is a caveat not in favor of Huawei. Roughly speaking, this smartphone is missing the option to disable the auto brightness. The tick itself can be removed, but after reboot it comes back and the brightness changes as the phone. Samsung also forced the auto brightness only turns on when a low battery level.

Both smartphones are on the way received 9 and Android proprietary shell. There is already an improvement, but from Huawei I like a little more. Samsung, in my opinion, it’s all too much “space” and rounded. And functions in EMUI, anyway, more enthusiasts will be very pleased with that lot there out of the box and it does not need to pick open firmware, root, or put third-party applications.

The sound in the headphones

Quality loudspeakers Samsung lot cooler. First, it produces stereo sound, and secondly, the volume capacity is higher, and thirdly, no distortion — the sound is decent, small but high-quality Bluetooth speakers.

A speaker in Huawei P30 is “just a speaker cheap smartphone”. The same as in your Honor 10 Lite or Redmi Note 7. A little deaf and “choking” to mush at high volume.

The headphones picture is at first other — include in drafting the headphones Pioneer SE-MHR5 (monitornig, 45 Th) music and think “maybe we shouldn’t criticize Huawei for sound quality? Normally the same kind of plays.” Bass makes “bdist” clearly, normal volume, treble a bit butchered, but it’s like the good — to not ringing in the ears.

Every year, Huawei to teach its flagship sound good. Is not very good

But the climb into the settings and trying to bring the sound to mind and to bring it does not work — either add the “aquarium” effects in the sound, or increase clarity, and then you discover that Huawei clearly can not, and whirlings only make caustic hissing sounds (“plates” in percussion instruments and “Zhi-Shi write with the letter and” in the vocals), but I didn’t add.

Then you listen to Samsung, and he, though a smoother sound in contrast to the “pecking patsanskogo” Huawei, but also not happy detail. But Samsung is curable: climb in settings that include Dolby Atmos, include UHQ upscaler] on a higher bit depth and frequency, and enjoy almost standard for modern phone sound in the headphones.

Someday we will live to see the day in which Huawei will have normal sound not only in a huge MediaPad tablets but also in smartphones…

Performance and autonomy

Long live the substitution! Korean Samsung is working on a processor Korean, Chinese Huawei — the Chinese processor. If you have more — we have the Exynos and Kirin 9820 980.

9810 from last year’s Exynos (Galaxy S9/Note 9) and Kirin 970 (Huawei P20/Mate 20) chips mainly differ more sensible gaming performance and improved separate blocks for the “zakruchivanie” photo quality (HDR, AI-coloring, etc.). And lovers They will be very happy to know that the CPU finally stopped to discharge the battery at a frantic pace, even without serious burden, as it was in last year’s flagships.

While in the long term, samsonovsky Axinos still “crooked” and looks even worse than the Chinese less powerful, but more efficient (speed/voracity) Kirin 980. And in comparison with Snapdragon 855, which makes flagship smartphone Xiaomi, Sony, LG, and even the same Samsung S10, but for the US, Exynos 9820 even funny.

Because the process is less advanced (8 nm vs. 7 nm Snapdragon 855) what size is the “iron” variant with Exynos much bigger and more heated. A combination of powerful cores M4 + average in the ratio of power and efficiency A75 + economical A55 sadder than in theory. The average power of the kernel in the end to eat as much and “powerful”. But are slower.

Samsung partially freed their processors from gluttony and brought their consumption to a level of 2018. But then “suddenly” come 2019, and the competitors again went forward

Whether or not to panic? Hardly — the fast processors and large batteries and fuel-efficient screens of any new Samsung S10 will be enough at least until the evening, and then on the day.

Just remember that Exynos is still the “oven” with a smaller stock of real performance in the future in comparison to Kirin or Snapdragon. And in the same screens/batteries smartphones models with Exynos will run out faster. All as always.

For example, the Xiaomi Mi 9, you can see how all the competing “supermodel” processors are parodies of the real king power on Android.

As for autonomy, Huawei P30 battery capacity more, hence the difference in autonomy. In this case, I note, from Samsung a quick discharge is not suffering — that is, to worry whether he will survive until the end of the day, don’t have. Huawei P30 just works even longer.

Camera

Both smartphones partially inherit their older camera models and both got an ultra-wide angle module, where you can shoot both photo and video. Samsung Galaxy S10e additionally knows how to shoot wide angle selfies (not really “super”, but still), and Huawei P30 features a 3x optical zoom. Yes, it is optical, with almost no loss of quality.

However, it is not correct to call this zoom because the mechanism is not just a smartphone switches on the camera with a ready fixed zoom lens (other focal length).

I note that the benefits of this lens really is, and it really allows you to recognize more details in the picture. Additionally, you can use the digital zoom to 5x zoom (compared to the wide-angle).

Thus, Samsung camera two-way recording (shirik and swearshirt), and camera Huawei — four. But there is one caveat.

Huawei right and left brags about the fact that the camera P30 instead of 40 megapixels, but this permission is only available for standard back camera without approximations or “departures” back. Zoom is only 10 megapixels. Moreover, the standard interface app is made very inconvenient — if you want to remove 40 MP, no zoom in or zoom out the picture, you can not. Need to go into the settings and switch back to 10 MP.

Huawei has lowered the quality of the cameras in P30 compared to the P30 Pro, and Samsung moved the camera from S10+ in the Junior version. Therefore, in all but the steepness of the zoom, P30, or equal or behind Galaxy S10e

It turns out, for maximum compatibility all the time keep shooting at 10 MP. At the same time, swearshirt still shoots in 16 MP.

Samsung images on a standard lens obtained in 12 MP and swearshirt — 16 MP. Switching, however, also sometimes suffers — the button sometimes “sticks” enables the seamless digital zoom is to get out of it is necessary to press the “back” button. By the way, the angle sversheniy the Galaxy S10e much more than the competitor — can do to accommodate high-rise buildings in the shot when standing next to them.

Quality photos definitely compare smartphones difficult. Huawei has ceased as hell to screw up the colors even in AI mode, which is commendable, but because the images look natural in any way. Samsung is also doing well, but the color is different. Some pictures I like from Huawei P30 the Samsung Galaxy S10e. Night, however, Samsung is still better just because of the lack of “shake”. To remove a stable frame for Huawei P30 with a lack of lighting is much more complicated.

Because P30, in fact, has a camera of P20 Pro, but further “castrated” by removing optical image stabilization. But Samsung back camera full (same as S10+) and not mutilated by the marketing tricks. The result of matching.

By the way, TVersity both smartphones slightly “colored” photos. Looks even more interesting.

As for the video, then there is a definite leader — Samsung Galaxy S10e. From Huawei with the video, in principle, was always not very good, and here the trend continues. The clarity is noticeably lower, and at night — even a complete nightmare (especially at 60 fps, so it is a night example I took 30). Except that, you can use the zoom.

Differences even on the level of performance: Huawei supports a maximum of 4K/30 fps, while Samsung 4K/60 fps. But even so, 4K video with Huawei P30 looks bad — too high color saturation, jerking pictures. Have the same Samsung 4K really excellent — all at altitude. Overall, Galaxy S10e is one of the best cameras for photography among smartphones of all time.

By the way, Galaxy S10e supports stabilization modes Full HD (including 60 fps) and even 4K (but it’s only 30 fps). At the same time, in 4K mode the Samsung lifts the color as it does Huawei (especially at night).

Competitors

Xiaomi Mi 9
At the time of this writing Xiaomi Mi 9 in option 6/128 GB worth in the official retail 38 thousand rubles. For the money this is the fastest and coolest smartphone, but less hardy, without the 3.5 mm connector. Also, in the photo he is still inferior and Huawei P30 and Samsung Galaxy S10e, however, it takes still better than a leader of the Junior Huawei.

LG ThinQ G8

The main drawback of LG G8 — he’s not officially in Russia, and it is not clear whether and at what price. Nevertheless, tighter is now clear that before us is a smartphone with a very sharp ultra wide angle camera, great sound, super battery and so-so battery life. Camera in some cases equal to, and often inferior to what we see in Huawei P30 and Samsung Galaxy S10e. If not a cool sound in the headphones and Quad HD display, it would be impossible to explain why do I need a smartphone with the same Xiaomi Mi 9.

Total

To choose between Samsung Galaxy S10e and Huawei P30 hard. The strengths of Samsung — the ergonomics, the sound in the headphones and from the speakers, video recording, memory card support and water resistance.

But Huawei slightly better screen, 3x optical zoom without any loss in quality, better autonomy, and yet it is a bit cheaper. All other differences — from the field of quibbles and purely subjective assessments.

At the same time, some bright flaws in smartphones just yet. Is that the fingerprint scanner doesn’t work so clearly as we would like, but it is a problem for both of them.

What is the difference between these “basic flagships” from full? Older Samsung from S10e differ only additional selfie camera (not much useful), slightly more powerful speakers and a more capacious battery. A senior Huawei P30 Pro you will get the earpiece in the screen (useless, but it seems to be prestigious), sensational 5x optical zoom for great pictures from a great distance, more quality photos in the evening and night.

As you know, iPhone, Xr cannot be called super-popular smartphone, but thanks to him, that “he died for our sins” — thanks to this phone we finally have our “mini-flagships” with a stuffing which you are not ashamed. And there was a possibility not to overpay for bells and whistles the more expensive models, which is useless to us. And the money is never superfluous.
