NEW YORK, July 11. /TASS/. The US administration will conduct a study of the legality of France’s decision to develop its own legislation governing the taxation of the American digital giants, and according to its results may introduce additional duties on French goods and services. This was announced on Wednesday, the business news Agency Bloomberg, citing two sources.
According to them, the official White house statement on this account is expected to be circulated later Wednesday. The decision will authorize the U.S. representative for trade negotiations Robert Leitheiser during the year to analyze the consequences of the decision of Paris for United States companies such as Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google. Leithauser will be recommended according to the results of the investigation to develop countermeasures similar to those that the United States has taken against Chinese companies accused of stealing American intellectual property.
According to the publication, the Chairman of the Senate judiciary Committee of the U.S. Congress, Republican Charles Grassley, and a senior Democrat in the Committee, Ron Wyden sent last month to Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin a letter with a request to convince Paris to refrain from imposing an additional tax against the American digital giants. Senators recommended to use “all available legislative remedies”, including doubling the rate of taxation of French citizens and companies throughout the United States.
It is considered that in relation to Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and other digital corporations taxation should be based on what countries they are the main profit not from where geographically located their head offices. The most active supporters of the introduction of such digital tax are France and Britain, which have already started working on its own legislation on this matter. However, the French Finance Minister Bruno Le Mayor, who took part in the two-day meeting of Finance Ministers and heads of Central banks G20 in Japanese Fukuoka in June, admitted the possibility of refusal of Paris from this idea in the case of the adoption of common international rules.
