Huawei not only experimenting with folding smartphones, but also produces quite a familiar and classic devices — laptops. Recently released a new model, Matebook 13, which is surprisingly cheap, finally has a replaceable SSD, and much, much more powerful than the latest MacBook Air.
Look, keyboard, ports
In 2019 I won’t be able to surprise you if I told you that this ultrabook weighs only 1.3 kilograms and at a thickness of not more than 15 mm. However, one should not underestimate how this is useful if you constantly carry a notebook with you and almost all you never part with it. Especially when under the hood is a very powerful CPU (which will be covered later). Fans in each new notebook to see references to “Mambalam” this time can celebrate Matebook 13 for sale in the color “Space gray.” Who else the color of the laptop is called “Space gray”? Yes, you all guessed correctly. If, however, aside from the “Oh my God, someone released a gray laptop, gray as is, Apple now nobody makes gray laptops!”, then Matebook 13 looks very nice. He has a solid look without the bright accents — just a dark gray body and black keyboard keys, nothing more.
Sooner or later you will catch the eye of that Matebook 13 — the laptop is a bit unusual forms. Huawei is going back to the basics, so the device received the display with a long-forgotten aspect ratio of 3 to 2. Accordingly, not only the screen but the whole laptop is a few square that looks a bit strange on the background of usual laptops with screens 16:9.
Why do I need to change the conventional elongated ratio more square? Perhaps Huawei wants to stand out. Or focuses their laptops for those who do not particularly will look at this 13-shke movies, but will be working a lot with tables or code — there is the height of the screen plays a role. If you also plays, you have to accept that most movies have to watch with wide black bars top and bottom.
Curiously, 15 mm is not the thinnest ultrabook, but the sidewalls are still only two USB Type-C and mini-Jack for headphones. Because if you look closely, the thickness of the body from the middle to the edges becomes much smaller.
Reveals the laptop is not 180 degrees, but still fairly widespread. Unlike Huawei Matebook X, web-camera here on the screen and not embedded in the keyboard, so the viewing angle during a video will be successful. But special curtains or something there, so if you are very much worried about unauthorized access to your webcam, then save only the tape.
By the way, since I remembered Matebook X 2018, it is impossible not to notice that two of these laptop very similar to each other. But Matebook 13 is slightly smaller in length and depth. So, it has no speakers on the sides of the keyboard — they are at the “bottom”, a click pad plus the new model is less high.
The keyboard does not go up and down and does not Flex from a set of text — that’s a big plus for a slim laptop. But the keystroke is one of the minimum on the market. Who had not dealt with the ultrabook will be a long time to get used to. The keypad backlighting is white, duplex. Separate from the main unit keyboard, no buttons, except the round power key. If you do not know and never guess that it is both a fingerprint scanner. Put a finger — I went to your profile. Sensor works excellent, that, unfortunately, is not always the case with laptops.
To the right of ClickPad there is a big sticker that says Huawei Share. So is a new feature that allows you using NFC to instantly transfer files. Took a picture, put your laptop (where the stickers), and here the picture is already on the laptop. Of course, Huawei wants to make its ecosystem, so it will work only with its smartphones, and it is only those who have the latest operating system (and NFC). But by itself, the feature is very convenient and so obvious that it is unclear why it is still there in each and every laptop. In 2019 we live or not?
Back to the port. Have Matebook 13 of them less than Matebook X, namely there is no full-size USB Type-A, so all the time have to use the adapter. And two available USB Type-C are without the support of Thunderbolt 3. On the one hand, it is a Junior model in the series, so it’s not surprising. With another — the Lenovo Yoga S730 for almost the same money, just two Thunderbolt 3.
Honestly, looks the main hero of the review produces only positive impression. Solid exterior, not flimsy construction, excellent build quality. The only thing that can stop this is the unusual aspect ratio of the screen (but for someone it will be a plus).
Screen and sound
Resolution 13-inch display above the usual Full HD 2160х1440 pixels. This gives us a higher pixel density than a conventional 13.3-inch displays with 16:9 and 1920×1080, and 200 ppi vs 164. Glossy coating, that is, reflects all that whatever is handy, and the screen is not touch. The frame around the matrix narrow, but wider than the same ASUS ZenBook 13 UX333FA.
The display itself is more than decent. Importantly, after the purchase to turn off auto brightness, and it may seem that this is a dim glow — a maximum illumination of this matrix. It is actually much better if you set the level by hand. Rendering at the display level: almost perfectly covers the sRGB standard, and the deviation accuracy of the mapping of the shades are minimal. Besides, almost perfectly tuned color temperature of 6700 K, which means that the image will not look “colder” than it’s intended. Contrast is good, but not as good as the ASUS ZenBook 13 UX333FA.
Speakers located on the bottom, but their sound I really liked. First, the sound is clear and legible even at high volumes. Second, with the volume all is good here — we can heartily crunching popcorn and not miss a single replica of the movie.
Performance and work offline
In Russia Huawei Matebook 13 is presented only in a single configuration. But in quite a good. For example, the processor is one of the newest, namely the Intel Core i5-8265U. It is a modern 4-core ultramasculine, who knows not only easy to operate soft General office clerk, but also to perform much more complex tasks — give him just a little more energy and cooling! Which, however, manufacturers of compact laptops almost never give.
x264 HD Benchmark 4.0:36,6 fps
Blender (bmw27_cpu test):14 minutes, 55 seconds.
Speed read/write RAM:22969 / 32632 Mbit/s
Some people accept nothing less than Intel Core i7. But not every ultrabook of it is good, because not every ultrabook cooling system to cope at least c i5 the eighth generation. In the new Matebook 13, things are good. But not good too — prolonged load-frequency drops to approximately 2200-2500 MHz, the body is well heated in many places. Now imagine, that here would stand i7.
However, even when the Intel Core i5-8265U not allowed to realize their power, they are still much more productive than 2-nuclear nizkovoltnoy previous generations, so laptops with the “Oldies” is not even worth considering in my opinion. The money will not benefit, and productivity will lose. And since we mentioned the value and power of the device, it is impossible not to think about a fresh MacBook Air, which was twice slower CPU (Intel Core i5-8210Y), but is an average of 90 thousand rubles.
A lot of people wouldn’t mind a discrete graphics card in the laptop, but in Matebook 13 it is. But in Russia everything is for sale configuration without it, only with built in CPU. “Insertions” are almost not changed in the last years and is still not suitable for games absolutely. But it does not claim to Intel, as a reminder to you that in all sorts of GTA V to play here will fail. But with NVIDIA GeForce MX150 would have failed — such is the reach of the Russians configuration. The truth, of course, the price tag would have been different. RAM here, as in almost all other ultrabooks on the market. In the Russian Matebook 13 have 8 GB energy-efficient DDR3L, which operates in dual channel mode. Again, will have to think, do you have enough the right volume or not. If you just watch movies and high Amateurs to handle photographs, it is more than enough. And for running virtual machines, video rendering, etc. it would be better, of course, more.
Data all a little better. The older model, the one with the i7 and the MX150, the SSD is replaceable, and therefore more likely to change can be the one that is in a younger model. But to change you might want.
No, it works very quickly. Sequential read speeds in CrystalDiskMark huge — 3747 MB per second. However, the entry occurs twice slower, but it’s still very high figures, and more you may not need ever in life. But the volume of 256 GB confuses me. So, hopefully, an SSD is not soldered as in last year’s Matebook X. In the older, unavailable in Russia configuration. Matebook 13 is going to have a more solid 512 GB.
The battery in Matebook 13 is not the greatest for ultrabook, 42 WH, so you can surf the Internet on the “Matbucha” only 6 hours and 48 minutes at a time. This is two hours less than last year’s flagship Matebook X (57 WH) and less than half than the ASUS ZenBook 13 UX333FA (50 WH). In demanding tasks will be even much less, at least twice.
The main character is captivating review low price — after all, 67 thousand rubles in the official store for such a good ultrabook is a good suggestion. However, the ubiquitous Xiaomi for 70 thousand offers Mi Laptop Air 13.3 is largely the same ultrabook, but with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce MX150. If we take similar notebooks with no separate graphics card, the two nearby enemies.
ASUS ZenBook UX333FA
About the laptop we were told recently. It ASUS decided to re-approach the question of compactness of ultrabooks. No, the new model is not the easiest and not the most thin. But engineers managed to make the depth of the housing is minimal, and the screen is almost completely left without frames, so it is much more compact than any other ultrabook with a 13.3-inch.
On average, over 67 thousand rubles, this model also offers Intel Core i5-8265U and soldered 8GB of RAM. But there are already SSD 512 GB, which is nicer. And it is also possible to replace, if you want some terabytes. It is a little bigger battery, and also has full-size ports — HDMI and USB 3.0, but USB-C was not. There is also a card reader. He though for a microSD, but Huawei Matebook 13 no.
Lenovo Yoga S730
Though this laptop and part of the family “Yoga”, but the transformer he is not. Why is he so named is a mystery. In General, do not break it by trying to open 360 degrees.
It is a rather weighty dignity. Yes, it’s 13-shka with Intel Core i5-8265U, but has just 16 GB of RAM. Very good for the price. However, he is already 73 000. Drive here on a 256 GB, but not soldered, so you will be able to change to a more suitable size. It is also the only laptop of the three mentioned supporting high-speed Thunderbolt port 3, and more precisely, even with two such ports. More advantage if you only have in them a need. Or if it will be with time. However, there are no full-size USB, HDMI, too, so you’ll have to live in a future where everyone is walking with an adapter for your laptop.
Output Matebook 13 — that’s great news. Of course, Matebook X company is good, but not everyone needs such an expensive ultrabook. And the new model will allow, and not such a frantic appetite to buy a good, productive and high-quality ultrabook. Of course, for the money there is no discrete graphics card, like the Xiaomi Mi Laptop Air 13.3, but Xiaomi, as always, an exception.
Matebook 13 has an equally unusual screen ratio as Matebook X — 3 to 2, which should appeal to those who often work with vertical data, for example in text editors or environments for the development — rather than those who like movies in the ubiquitous 16 to 9.
Good keyboard, no Flex from typing, although the keys are very modest depth of stroke. A little frustrating that there are like no full-sized ports (USB Type-A, HDMI) or at least some of the card reader and Thunderbolt ports 3.0. Was a bit awkward decision — only USB Type-C, but not very fast. But data transfer from your smartphone with one touch — great app. However, remember that the flagship smartphone Huawei is worth more than that laptop… I Also really liked the sound of this “baby.” Loud and clear — movies and TV shows you can watch without problems.
Performance no complaints. “Iron” speaks for itself: a powerful 4-core Intel Core i5-8265U works in such thin laptops are often not worse than the i7 (due to restrictions), 8 GB of memory should be enough for many daily tasks, and 256GB of extremely fast. And it’s even possible to change that at all is remarkable.
