On the night of 6 October 1948 in the capital of the Turkmen SSR Ashkhabad, a devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Richter scale. Its center was positioned almost directly under the city at a depth of 18 kilometers.

As a result of natural disasters killed more than 2/3 of the inhabitants of the city were destroyed 98% of the buildings. Still the exact number killed there, in Turkmenistan, is considered a significant figure, which is indicated in the book of the first President Saparmurat Niyazov “Ruhnama”: during the earthquake of 198 residents of the capital of the Turkmen SSR was lost 176 thousand people.
