These three cooling methods I mention in order of their effectiveness.

The coolers in a PC case is to minimize the passive dissipation of heat generated by the processor. Passive diffusion should be possible to delay the moment of switching on of the throttle. And the throttle should not give the CPU to heat up to dangerous temperatures.

These three ways of cooling, of course, doesn’t work “from the bulldozer”.

As laptop manufacturers are designing cooling

It is clear that in an ideal world throttle should not be. But in reality, almost all processors “throttled”.

To a lesser extent this happens in desktops: the ability to install a variety of systems of active cooling, large volumes of the hull and the air inside allows the processors to operate at maximum power, not heat up to dangerous temperatures.

Most of all “trottles” processors in smartphones: the lack of active cooling, a closed housing, and the race for specifications force manufacturers of processors and the developers of operating systems to come up with incredibly complex mechanisms to limit the performance. Additionally, the added low-power batteries, whose capacity is not able long to maintain the maximum power of the mobile chips.

With laptops the situation is very different. If the efficiency of coolers and the dissipation of the processor is balanced, and the throttle will occur only minimally.

This “balance” is called TDP — requirements for the heat sink in watts (W here means the output thermal energy), and is set by the manufacturer of the chip. That is, the higher the TDP the more heat the chip. The TDP should be laid in the design of the cooling system of the laptop, otherwise the trouble.

The value of TDP calculated heat dissipation during operation of the processor on nominal frequency — the one that is listed first in the specifications. For example, the MacBook Air CPU TDP is 15 watts, and the MacBook Pro 2018 — 35/45 watts.

And everything would be fine and understandable. But Intel has a feature called Turbo Boost.

This is actually overclocking the chip in real time up to 1.8 times. It is activated automatically when the CPU load approaches the maximum.

Overclocking does not go unnoticed: increases not only power consumption but heat dissipation. To extinguish it before activating serious throttle, it is logical to pre-design the cooling of the laptop with the expectation of Turbo Boost.

It was made for the first generation of ultra-thin MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. The old layout of the case “enough” and for the next generation (model 2017: 13 and 15 inches). But for the new Core i9 — all the bolts.
