In St. Petersburg launched a new visual campaign On Tour from Apple. The photographs capture moments from the performances of musicians of different musical genres — from jazz musician Kamasi Washington and rapper Tyler, the Creator, to delicate art-rock of the band Florence and the Machine and constantly experimenting with the sounds of British singer FKA twigs.

All images in the campaign taken by photographers who are familiar with the performers and skillfully show the emotional and personal moments of live performances. The St. Petersburg music scene, introduced the participants of the thrash-pop band Little Big in the lens of photographer Evgeny Ivanov. Here are his 8 tips on how to do reportage photography on the iPhone.

As paradoxical as it may sound, but while shooting with the bad lighting in the first place is to look for a more lit scene. In any case, all around us are sources of light — street lamps, room lighting, neon signs or even projectors at concert venues. Try to stick as close as possible, because the photo and the light cannot exist separately from each other.

It is also important to steadily hold your iPhone, the best two hands. This will avoid blurred shots, because in low light the exposure time increases. However, this advice can be ignored if you need to get less than sharp photos for artistic purposes. For example, when you need to create the effect of movement in the frame.

Use of continuous shooting, it also increases chances of getting a good shot. For example iPhone Xs Max is able to shoot at 10 frames per second, which is a good indicator in the world of digital cameras. Be sure to use this when you need choose a good the.

Think a step ahead. During shooting of moving images (especially in low light) try to predict the actions of the subject, it will give you the opportunity to be at the point of shooting early and you will definitely manage to catch the best frame. In this case you do not have to run somewhere, often enough to take a step to the side or to turn around a few degrees.

Take control of exposure. It’s pretty simple, it is always better not posvetiti frame than peresvyet. Tap the screen, hold for a few seconds and move the slider down until the frame will not disappear all too bright region. Always do it, regardless of the shooting conditions. And remember, even very dark at first glance, the shots do not necessarily flawed.

Look for contrast. In poor light conditions more advantageous are the objects with clear boundaries, such as dark silhouette of a person against a bright background. In this situation, even the lack of detail in the shadows will not play a significant role because of the good recognition of the object. Experiment with lighting, looking for the best angles and shapes.

I’m not a big fan of using third-party apps for photography on iPhone. As experience shows, the standard camera is more than enough in the vast majority of cases, including in conditions of poor lighting. Auto mode works perfectly here. The main advantage of the “native” camera is a quick launch directly from the lock screen. Applications of other developers do not give such possibility and eventually you may be rather disappointing because of the missed frames.

Don’t forget about the flash, often it turns on automatically. I had a few occasions when it is prevented to do the while remaining invisible. However, in many cases, the built-in flash will make your shots more distinctive and of high quality. The main condition here is to be at a distance from the object to its power was enough. I would say that it is about 1-2 meters for the best results.
