One of the most memorable open-airs of the summer — international festival “Jazz seasons” celebrated the first anniversary, to collect under the open sky many fans and connoisseurs of jazz music. Forbes Life talked to its founder and ideological inspirer, the art Director of the Moscow jazz orchestra of Igor Butman.

What distinguishes the festival this year, from a musical point of view from previous years?

“Jazzовые seasons,” United not only famous musicians, but also provide an opportunity to show themselves young — this year they are on this stage, along with veterans and jazz legends. Perhaps the most brilliant representative of the “young jazz” is one of the best trumpeters of our time — Christian Scott and his team. Among the legends were, for example, American organist and pianist Larry Goldings and his trio, a completely unique team: one of my favorite drummers bill Stewart and guitarist Peter Bernstein, in whom I met in America in 1991. Played and luminaries of the local scene — my teacher, the outstanding musician, one of the best performers of mainstream David Goloschekin, who recently turned 75, and he is in great shape.

Can you tell me about your favorite jazz albums that they have in common?

It is difficult to restrict myself to five, but the first music that I heard, perhaps my favorite.

This album by saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, his live version recorded in San Francisco.

Second, the record, which I heard for the first time on film, then it became vinyl disc — a wonderful composition of the quintet of the famous Soviet jazz trumpeter Konstantin Nosov and Gennady Holstein “Time has come” — Now is the time 1988.

Then the concert version of the album Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. Finally, Coltrane Plays The Blues and the fifth album — Kind of Blue miles Davis.

I can name 5 other albums, such as significant and important for me, I didn’t call the record Herbie Hancock, who also love, but it can be like a favorite Symphony of Beethoven, it is impossible to say which of them is preferable. All of these albums are United by the incredible skill, penetrating depth and energy. For me they are the epitome of jazz style and performance.

And non musicians close to you?

Legends of rock Deep Purple, from the academic names I would pick Anna Netrebko as the vocalist, of course, Luciano Pavarotti, pianist Denis Matsuev and conductor Valery Gergiev, Mikhail Pletnev, Maxim Vengerov, singer Stevie wonder. These are people that I admire, some of them I know personally.

Now the music is available on iTunes at the Apple Music on other platforms and services, as it changes the music industry?

Primarily, this allows you to purchase music content for all tastes, quickly and legally. View a number of music represented on these platforms…just a dream of any music lover. At the same time is both a blessing and a huge challenge: still there is a struggle for the listener and I believe that jazz musicians should participate in this competition and win, to prove that our music gives more than just a catchy tune: ideas to ponder, thoughts to love and the knowledge that is important for creative and creative people.

It is considered that Russian jazz — quite a local history. What is happening with jazz in Russia, what is his future? This year marks the 20th anniversary of your team, the Moscow jazz orchestra. How to change the audience and the musicians themselves?

Jazz and academic music is not something can dramatically change within ourselves, so every little change takes place as a revolution. The audience is much younger now, became more progressive, a lot of young musicians with great interest and ambition, there are new festivals, jazz clubs, jazz became a part of Russian culture. And I am very proud that my enthusiasm and energy also contributed.

And we are working to ensure that Russian jazz would become an equal part of the international audience — organize an international site — for example, have, for example, the international forum fest Jazz Across Borders, invite foreign, European, American specialists at all levels, conduct show cases for Russian artists, many of our artists after these forums get invitations abroad — in Japan, America, China, Canada. The level of our jazz — not local, but global. Therefore, we all inspire on new feats, because we have a global presence, we listen, and we prove that the level of such festivals as Jazzoвые seasons.

Jazz as a kind of musical art has little to do with politics. If music has a political task?

Today I listened to an interview with the Georgian singer Nino Katamadze, she said that it is wrong to put that music out of politics. I think that any opinion has a right to be, even if it is so…the music should be in line with the policy of constructive politics of love, compromise, reconciliation and understanding! We have one future, one of joy and sorrow. It is the music we can brighten up our spiritual experiences. In fact, we all have one common goal — we need to bring people together. Because art in General and music in particular, like nothing else in this direction. I once sat at a concert of the American jazz vocalist Shirley horn, and when she performed amazing melodies and sang, I did not notice as he took her hand the girl that sat next to me on a nearby chair — which was almost a stranger. We sat holding hands…

This is a political task of the music, not divide: actors should not refuse to perform and play for someone, on the contrary — they should play and to speak so that people of different nationalities, religions, political views were of a mind to its not creative ambition, ego, imaginary contradictions, the task of musicians is to hasten this moment to help people come to happiness. Of course, with the music and you can go into battle. No wonder they say — “to Die — so with music.” But why “die” when you can still live with music?
