Apple plans to abandon the built-in display module Touch ID in smartphones. Instead, the company will promote the technology of facial recognition Face ID represented in X. iPhone
This was stated by respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
One of the reasons why Apple might take such a decision, is that a new generation of high-performance OLED screens are not compatible with sensors that identify the entire area of the screen. However, manufacturers of Android-based smartphones interested in technology, and this means that the main difference between the platforms will be reduced to confrontation: Face ID against the built-in display, fingerprint scanner.
September 4 in the new report, Kuo said that the use of scanner technology in the display (Fingerprint On Display, FOD) in 2019 will grow by 500%, as Android devices will continue to develop in this direction. But Apple will not implement this technology in the new iPhone in the next few years.
This year there was a rumor about what Apple is working on built-in display-Touch ID. It was expected that the company will introduce this technology in iPhone XS.
Kuo claims that the facial recognition technology Apple as a biometric security solution works well on the iPhone. Android smartphones can serve as a testing field for improving Fingerprint technology On Display.
As noted by the Verge, Samsung is exploring the possibility to embed fingerprint sensors in the upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S10. This potentially creates a situation in which two producers will think about what method of identification is better.
Even if Kuo is right, it will not mean that Apple will refuse to Touch ID in the display. The company may wait until technology progresses enough to incorporate touch ID into the screen.
