The operators decided to develop 5G together.

Mobile operators MTS, MegaFon, Beeline and Tele2 will create a single infrastructure operator for the development of 5G networks in Russia. Discussion of the concept of the operator currently ongoing, but the agreement between the operators of the “big four” already exist. This was announced by Deputy Minister Oleg Ivanov.

According to Ivanov, it is unknown how the operators MTS, MegaFon, Beeline and Tele2 will formalize the partnership between them. However, it just goes on joint development of fifth generation networks in Russia. All operators from among the “big four” even withdrew their applications for obtaining specific frequencies for 5G, said Ivanov.

The main advantage of the joint work of MTS, MegaFon, Beeline and Tele2 will be saving money on the development of 5G in Russian cities. Earlier experts considered that if each operator would act by itself, the overall costs for implementation of 5G only in the cities will amount to 163 billion rubles for five years. If the operators of the “big four” will work together in partnership they will be able to reduce the cost up to 72 billion rubles.

This will have an impact on the cost of the use of 5G networks for subscribers, experts say. As the cost of operators will be less, they will be able to offer more favorable terms of use of networks of the fifth generation.
