Design and technology for a better life

Space10 is a research design laboratory, whose mission is to create a better and more sustainable ways of living.

We work with different brands: for example, IKEA supports us. We help them realize their vision of a better everyday life for a large number of people.

Space10 — quite a small team. We are only 30 people. But we collaborate with many different specialists: architects, engineers, design studios. We now have about 150 to 200 companies and individuals with whom we work on different projects.

Our office is located in the area of production of packaged meat in Copenhagen. We recently opened gallery, which exhibited both their own and others ‘ work. We spend a lot of popup events around the world.

In fact we work in the field of the study of design and culture. We ask ourselves the question: “What is the best life?”. And try to analyze new opportunities. Within the design we try to find answers to the questions and turn them into possible sustainable scalable business.

I want to tell you about a few projects we have recently completed.

Local

This project started with the invention of the hydroponic farms that are in our office on the ground floor. We cultivated lettuce.

One day we thought, is it possible to use this technology in order that more people could afford to grow fresh herbs for yourself?

We organized an exhibition, where he built a larger version of our farm. All greens are grown on site and then added to salads.

Immediately after this event, IKEA decided to invest in the aquaponic farm. With this help we have become the largest manufacturer of this kind mobile farms. IKEA is now supported, and the scale of the project at the international level.

Urban Village

Urban Village implies community living together — living here together several generations of the same family. For us it is very important.

We built this project in collaboration with a Danish architect and IKEA. On research and the implementation of this idea took two years. We tried to come up with “life of tomorrow” and create a fully integrated solution to the housing issue, including suitability for life, sustainable development, environmental friendliness and accessibility.

Sustainability is a significant part of the design of this project. The building itself is based on the standard modular system of multi-layered glued wooden panels. They can be reused if you ever want to disassemble your home. But don’t worry, you don’t have to assemble it yourself — we supply turn-key solution.

We tried to create the most flexible proposal that can be adapted to any family. If your family is growing, and the apartment changes with you — it gives you the opportunity to stay in the same community, moving from place to place.

Another aspect is availability. Housing in our time — a very expensive pleasure, it is not available for all, so we proposed the idea of a subscription to house: there is a monthly fee for rent, electricity, logistics, infrastructure, utilities. We want to offer a including any additional subscription, such as, food, entertainment, insurance, transportation or sports activity.

It can be either skyscrapers as in Shanghai or a small village in Colombia.

Future technologies

Now, almost four and a half billion people connected to the Internet, 52% of the population use smartphones. And what happens when everyone in the world will be connected to the global network, and artificial intelligence will be able to feel and learn on their own? If we can use technology to improve the quality of life?

Progress is changing people’s lives, but not always for the better. Now our world has shrunk to a five-inch display. Question: “How we got to this point”?

At the dawn of the computer age to interact with the machines had to be able to speak their language — to code. Apple invented the user interface, and it unexpectedly changed the world in which we live, computers have begun to speak our language. In the end, it turned into a touch-display that is even easier to use — it is totally intuitive, even our grandmothers can easily use them. What’s next? We think it will be a lot of products that will make augmented reality a daily occurrence.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality is technology that enhances and improves everyday human behavior. These are the designs that speak to us in our language. For example, applications that react to our gestures. Or unmanned vehicles — you can just hop in the car and go, you don’t need to learn to drive.

Tim cook, Apple CEO, says that in a few years we can’t imagine life without augmented reality. Here it is necessary to make a clarification: the virtual and augmented reality — are two different concepts.

Virtual reality is an artificially created world. And augmented reality is making a real difference. Perhaps the most famous example of this technology filters Snapchat or advanced version of Pokemon Go where the pokemon can react to the world.

Smart glasses

Now augmented reality exists only in our phones. This means that we need to look at the screen is uncomfortable. We think, in the near future, the phone will turn into a “constellation” of small devices: phone, headphones and smart glasses.

It is obvious that large companies such as Amazon, Apple, Samsung bet on points. By the way, the same company patented the lenses of augmented reality — using them is even easier. Why are companies so interested in this technology? Because this is a new opportunity for business.

But there is a problem with the current version of points — people look at them really stupid.

And the company began to recognize, in particular, Google has started to design her glasses, and Apple has hired the famous designer Marc Newson, who now works with Jonathan YWAM. Before Apple started to work with smart clock, they looked to bulky to put on a hand computer, and now these watches have become a fashion accessory. In the end, points will be the same.

“Wonderland”

Very soon we will begin to live in a new reality where virtual and real world merge together. We call it “Glass”. Space around people is to adapt to each person — this means that each space can accommodate hundreds of different ways.

Architects cease to be major players in development — to determine how it will look in the world around us, there are high-tech companies. This will entail certain consequences.

For example, a dark street in Hong Kong will be transformed into a stage for a Russian ballerina. The same applies to a Park in London — he suddenly turn into a place displaying a new music video. And in your living room to “settle” characters “Star Wars.”

This means that we will see the space completely different. The object or location from the real world will match the double of “Alice in Wonderland”. Metadata and tags are applicable to any object. This means that the entire planet will turn into a giant search engine. Very soon the art of cartography becomes so exact that the map size will be the same as the territory. At some point, augmented reality will become the new reality.
