With Honor 20 Pro a strange thing happened: initially, the company planned to bring the smartphone to the Russian market, but at the last moment refused this idea. Two months later, the novelty still get to us. Find out what offers the most advanced smartphone of the brand.

Design and ergonomics

It is time to accept that now the smartphones look the same — all the elements are familiar, only different combinations. In Honor of 20 Pro designers have also gone the way of harmonization: the case of glass and metal with sleek lines, a vertical camera unit on the back side, the screen “edge to edge”. However, it has a fresh solution.

First, the color. Rarely seen turquoise or purple smartphone, so new this attracts a lot of attention. However, the designers did not stop there and made a holographic effect on the back cover: layered substrate under glass refracts light, changing hue at different angles.

Front facing camera built into the screen, like View 20. More of the unusual power button with fingerprint scanner on the right side. A similar solution was found in smartphones by Sony, for example, Xperia L3, and turned out to be easier than the scanner from the back side.

Moderate size and rounded corners and edges enhance the grip. Sometimes, however, the smartphone tries to slip out of hands, so it is better to get a case immediately after purchase.

Screen

84% of the front panel is the screen diagonal of 6.26 inches and a resolution of Full HD+. A matrix type IPS covered by a protective glass with oleophobic coating. The pixel density is 412 ppi, which is enough for comfortable work — the graininess is not visible even on a small text.

By default, the color of calm, with a natural white balance. Fans of rich colours can enable “vivid” mode, while fine tuning is RGB-range color temperature.

Viewing angles are good, what one would expect from a high-quality IPS-screen. The depth of the black is also not satisfactory, although AMOLED in this regard is still far. The same can be said about the range of brightness, although it is sufficient for comfortable reading in the dark, and the streets.

Firmware and capabilities

Honor 20 Pro running Android 9 Pie shell Magic 2.1, which is more like a hybrid of iOS and the “green robot”. The stroke icon and the color scheme though peeped from Apple. However, the organization of the system and control logic have in common with other new Android smartphones.

Probably, the developers tried to please everyone: former iPhone users will see the familiar UX design, and Android fans will be able to easily navigate the firmware.

A chipset Hisilicon Kirin 980, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of memory. Performance is enough for comfortable web surfing and heavy gaming: “World of Tanks: Blitz” on maximum graphics settings gives 60 FPS in a gaming session.

Battery 4000 mAh with a margin enough for a day of active use, and if not load the smartphone is a heavy task — and for two days. Hour game “World of Tanks: Blitz” emptied the battery by 15%. Included is a charging adapter of 22.5 Watts, which smartphone is gaining 50% in 30 minutes.

Camera

Honor 20 Pro got four cameras on the back side: standard 48 MP with aperture of F/1,4, 8-Megapixel telephoto lens with triple zoom, a 2-Megapixel under water and another 16-Megapixel module under wide-angle shots.

Day smartphone takes off just fine: wide dynamic range, decent sharpness and accurate colors are pleasing to the eye in most scenarios. In rare cases, the camera is excessively overestimates the exposure, but it’s easy to fix manually. Surprisingly, despite a record for a smartphone aperture of F/1.4, chromatic aberration almost invisible.

Everything is also decently.

A telephoto lens produces detailed images with a three-fold approach.

And removes a wide-angle camera.

Photos in low light don’t make noise, colors are still close to natural. However, automation often increases the exposure, causing you to glare.

There is also a separate camera for macro photography. Its resolution is only 2 megapixels, the resulting images leave much to be desired. It would be better implemented this feature in Huawei P30 Pro, adding autofocus in wide angle camera.

But the front camera 32 MP not disappoint: selfies turn out great.

Videos are recorded at a maximum resolution of 4K at a frame rate of 30 FPS, and electronic stabilization. Supported encoding for efficient HEVC compression.

Recording is also available Slow-Mo 960 FPS.

Network and wireless interfaces

Over a month of testing network problems arose. The smartphone supports Wi-Fi 5 GHz and all of the Russian LTE bands.

Also in Honor of 20 Pro has Bluetooth version 5.0 with support for aptX HD codecs and LDAC for high-quality audio transfer. Do not forget about the NFC chip for quick pairing and contactless payments.

The results

Russian Honor Pro 20 is 34 990 rubles. For the money the user gets a bright design, quality screen, decent performance, decent work and universal camera — everything that you expect from any modern flagship.

Of course, you can complain to the slippery hull or absence of stereo speakers, but this does not spoil the impression of the device. As a result, the Honor has released a full-fledged competitor to the flagship Samsung and Sony for half the price.
