The main supplier of glass for smartphones, the firm Corning has announced a new generation of Gorilla Glass, able to survive up to 15 drops.
“Users are increasingly relying on their smart phones and become dependent on them. At the same time increasing the probability to break them. Now, more than ever, it is critical to protect them from damage when falling. Gorilla glass 6 was designed so that the smartphone can survive a fall from a greater height, but more importantly, to survive a few drops,” – said the founder of the company John Bain.
A recent study company Toluna has confirmed that users drop their smartphones about 7 times a year. The height of each drop is about one meter. These values guided the company Corning engineers created a new material that improves the strength of glass. According to laboratory tests, Gorilla Glass 6 can withstand up to 15 drops from a height of one meter. This is two times higher than in the previous generation.
Upgraded glass is not used anywhere yet and is likely to appear in smartphones in the next few months. In Apple devices it will only appear next year.
