About the crisis of business education but in my memory they say is already 15 years the business school conservative, inert, professors teach knowledge that is outdated already at the moment when they give it, shut yourself off from life for a year, and even more so the two in the modern rhythm of life is almost impossible. And so on — a lot of claims. Business school all this time, fought listlessly, somehow trying to answer criticism. For example, ran courses that call for beauty “mini-MBA” — like how not to throw life for a year, and it seems like MVA. At the very least have to start online. But in General nothing really has changed. And would not change for a long time. But will change now for at least two important reasons. First, people for whom the so-called branded schools was a pass to the next stage of career and that could be plenty to criticize, but still went to Stanford, Harvard and Wharton, it’s over. All of them more than 45 years, and they will not determine the future. And secondly, the company for which the presence of MBA was fundamentally important, is not the unquestioned leaders. Who we have the most expensive Corporation? Boring to repeat — can peruse the indexes. Amazon, Apple, Google. Who are the most promising unicorns? Uber, Tesla, WeWork. Now fold the “first” and “second”, even if it is primitive, and that get — today man does not have to be even with the diploma, his leadership is now not particularly care. Even if he is a top Manager, even if it’s SEO, even if he is the founder of the business. The case of Steve jobs, who went from Stanford, was formerly a meme (say, Steve is a genius, even a little crazy like Picasso, what to take with him), and now is the General norm. Young Zuckerberg has just graduated from Harvard and is likely already was a ritual ending. This does not mean that the business education (horrible word, by the way) is not necessary — but it does mean that in the new economy it’s not quite the same and sometimes not that. Business schools are trying, it is impossible not to give them their due. But not much time.

So gradually, there are quite a new school — or maybe they need to call something else, is unclear. For example, Singularity University and 42 in the Silicon valley, and THNK Hyper Island in Europe. What’s so special happening? You know who else is involved in the process? Technological Corporation. Here, for example, Google. The Corporation brings for its staff the best scholars, thinkers and coaches — even to train, really of mindfulness were taught the most, probably, well-known specialist in this from a science Professor John Kabat-Zinn, at least to inspire in the format of edutainment, for example, not so long ago the company had acted without any embellishment superstar Yuval Noah Harari. So why not have school? Why be new? Why educational projects run within the entrepreneurial-minded companies? Deliberately simplify. We all know about the hard skills and soft skills. The classic fundamental business education is, of course, about hard. If you are the leader, top Manager, just ambitious, educational institutions you all tell, show and explain. And do it well, science. But as soon as you imply that you and another person, they will refer you to the coaches and psychologists. It is usually so-called soft skills — things where a lot of psychology, and schools actually don’t really like to talk about them. Then let’s go back to “first” — young people do not perceive themselves from 9 to 18 as the leader, and then as someone else. They want to be successful and happy (remember this word — it will soon be replaced by the word “effective”) is always and everywhere: in your favorite business, a wife or husband, friends, parents. A lot of travel, have Hobbies, hang out. While many and a pleasure to work with. But all this must somehow be combined. Then the questions begin. As a full-time job after, say, sleepless parties? Or raise the degree of — how to combine the birth of a child and two trips a week? Business schools do not teach, they train you to “be a leader”. So we figured: people younger than 45 do not agree to compromise and want to know how to succeed anywhere. In this new reality, soft skills actually are not that soft, as, when and how much you sleep, whether you have a pair, do you drink vitamins and what what sport fits you, and a million other questions depends on how you will work (and, hence, what kind of leader will) – and be happy with life in the end.

Style, of course, sets Silicon valley on the one hand, the place is super-advanced, and with another — economically able to afford anything. It is an absolute center of power. Here are the most expensive and leading-edge companies, the most coveted unicorns, then first make and run self-driving cars, the world’s best smartphones, tablets from old age, ships that will travel to Mars. Here the richest and the most demanding consumers anything. And education, too. So their goal is to be happy, exactly the same Valley, not wall street, with the worship of capital, the gold watch and individual tailoring. So if we are talking in old terms, soft skills then become quite a hard. And can you today to say that upgrading memory for the SEO company that is developing this soft skill? According to my personal observations, the main directions of these soft-hard, if very rough, three (actually, of course, much more). I deliberately omitted a different kind of classic soft skills in the spirit of work on the psychology of decision-making and all that adjoins coaching, business coaching, psychology, leadership, etc. This is quite understandable and common things, and classical operators of education they give is pretty good.

Work on the mindset. Absolutely obscene color this year in Russia have blossomed this year courses on “awareness””. Initially, the idea is good, but it is, of course, immediately picked up pseudocode, speakers and all sorts of charlatans, so now you do not understand, who talks about consciousness, and who sells gum. In a very primitive form is simply an attempt to answer the main questions in life, to prioritize and try to manage it. Fashion came again from Silicon valley, whose leaders rocked the topic (the relevant practices were carried away jobs). As already mentioned, in Google, for example, about mindfulness, says Professor Kabat-Zinn (better look it up on YouTube). The most common tools that the practice of including the companies in Silicon valley — meditation and Vipassana. Meditation has become so common place that in corporations there is a meditation room, and entire courses (above mentioned Google, and here’s a link, lest you think that all of this is an exaggeration). Usually meditation is used without religious and even philosophical connotation — simply as a sort of exercise for the brain. Even has a helper application such as Headspace or Enso. Vipassana is also a very popular thing in principle, it is the practice of meditation, which looks like a trip to a special retreat, where man lives in a state of total silence, meditation and austerities (early, scanty food, etc.) for 10 weeks (there are different time formats). Thing is heavy — at least, I haven’t seen a single person who would say that it was easy. At the same time, many go on it many times as a sort of cleansing — helps to “clear the brain” and to prioritize. Vipassana is very common in the most influential minds in the Valley. In fairness I should say that there are studies that say that it is not shown to people with mental disabilities, and fine mental organization. Given the popularity of meditation and Vipassana, it is strange that their principles not yet adopted in classical training. But probably not for long. By the way, most likely already overgrown and not very legendary Burning Man festival, hanging out with all the color in Silicon valley, it is definitely also about the formation of the image of thinking.

The management of health. If in Russia, the focus still shifted to sports, and to a greater extent on running and triathlon, the world’s understanding is more complex. It is not even about biohacking — but why not, after all, is the thing that you preach too many modern leaders to consider it just a marginal fad. It is about engineering approach to the body and the body. But in General there is the understanding that the dream, all the knowledge about the brain, the condition adjacent to the medical part of psychology of relationships (say, sex) is what helps us to be effective in all areas of life and determines our capabilities, wear and tear, if you will. Well, sports too. Accordingly, the ability to manage all of this, it is the engineering approach, is important and interesting. A kind of management of the body — and in this form it one of the most respected institutions definitely does not. Characteristically, by the way, that a book about talking about it — Transcent — wrote in collaboration with physician Terry Grossman, Google’s chief futurist and co-founder of Singularity University ray Kurzweil. The subject of health in General very concerned about today’s leaders — at the time about it, said the founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov. Communication skills. The word giver is not quite the right meaning, and yet, communication is one of the most important modern business skills that traditional education usually tries to fit in PR, GR and IR and in the best case in basic skills of networking, which, of course, very primitive. And despite the fact that even when assessing the business schools one of the main criteria — the quality of graduates. So, networking and community work — the most important new skills that are not materiel, and that in General no one knows how to give efficiently. This kind of art though it depends on the personal success of any person, whatever he was doing. People have to “get” these skills independently. Already there are systems classic business clubs such as YPO or EO, but more young professionals, especially entrepreneurs, want something different, modern, so just create your Association. Not to go far, you can, for example, to remember the closed Moscow community “Schmitt 16”, which at the time made several young technology entrepreneurs. Perhaps, the conversation can be attributed to skill as mentoring (in any direction). Here, too, there is no materiel and practice, in fact, is created before our eyes.

Really surprising that a program in the spirit of YCombinator is the most authoritative accelerator in the world, where they released dozens of unicorns (Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe and Instacart, etc.) — is not adapted and does not replicate. And despite the fact that to get into YCombinator can, for obvious reasons, only the owner (you can see how they teach by the example of online-school YC). Perhaps, in many ways it is the prototype of the modern business education.

In the beginning, I deliberately slightly pricked the business school. Of course, they are not going anywhere, and, of course, classic leadership and management skills will be needed, but the bell really hard hits to traditional education, it has considerably lost the gloss.
