“Lopatina” or, as they are affectionately called, “phablets”, are still popular, although really a luxury smartphone with maximum features among them a little. Samsung Galaxy Note has long ceased to be record-large smartphone — “only” 6.4 inch diagonally. Once it was about-go-go, but thanks to the fashion for a reduction of framework even in the dimensions of the old “shovels” can be entered the display bigger. Today we have the most new and interesting to buy smartphones with extremely large screens new fashion proportions.
Today’s contenders, Xiaomi Mi 3 and Honor Max 8X Max, got screens with a diagonal of 6.9 inches and 7,12 respectively. What you need for fans of giant displays, if these fans don’t want to take tablets (especially Android tablets are completely useless nonsense).
Given the fact that the heroes of our test cased (don’t smile — all will soon start churning out folding and form factor of smartphones will again have to write, as in the era of cots and sliders) and elongated in the name of bezremontnoy screens, externally, the smartphone differ slightly. Honor 8X Max can be found through the inscriptions Honor under the screen, and the keyhole top.
Have Xiaomi Mi 3 Max no cutouts do not, and therefore again becomes relevant question — why ~~Volodya shaved his mustache~~ the manufacturer has rounded the corners of the screen. Well at least the radius of these fillets is small.
The back side from Xiaomi brushed metal, and the Honor — glossy glass. Personally, I prefer the first option — it is less Mara. By the way, what’s funny — even the profile curvature of the back sides of smartphones are literally identical, though they are both “off control” from the same manufacturer.
Even more interesting is that cheap, in fact, Xiaomi got the USB type-C, while the 8X Honor Max is the only micro-USB. As we will see in the section “performance and autonomy”, a newer connector, Xiaomi is needed not only for the sake of fashion and easy connection of charger.
Contrary to idiotic fashion, both phones have maintained a separate headphone Jack, but Honor it from the bottom, near the micro-USB port, and Xiaomi — top. Here the question is subjective, but personally I would prefer the second option so that the connector is easier to connect an external wired MIC while shooting at all sorts of stabilizers like DJI Osmo Mobile.
Another fundamental structural difference: the slot for SIM cards and memory cards Xiaomi — hybrid, and Honor. That is, in the case of 3 Mi Max the user will have to choose: either a second SIM or memory card.
What smartphones are comfortable in the hand will not write. First, so great cell phone, in principle, could not lie comfortably in the hand. Yes, you could talk at length about how great it is to have a large screen (it’s really cool), but to use with one hand smartphone with such dimensions will still be uncomfortable. Second, during testing I managed to drop one of them a cell phone (and that happens very rarely). The fall was not hard, and they didn’t break the skin, but still.
In order to help you understand how large the smartphones we have in the test, just keep in mind that each of them is about 10-15% larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note or Apple iPhone 9 XS Max. And even Xiaomi Mi Max 2, huge in itself, de facto, less than 8X Max, and Max Mi 3. Larger from plantations was that Lenovo Phab 2 Plus, but offered only a 6.4 inch diagonally against almost 7 inches in the new “bezrabotnykh”. However, the dead do not speak bad, so back from phablet Lenovo to our heroes.
Screen and interface
As I said, the Xiaomi Mi 3 Max screen with a diagonal of 6.9 inches, and Honor 8X Max — 7,12 inches. In fact, the difference in the diagonal is not visible — just Honor the screen is a little over stretched on the long side. Therefore, the picture clarity and the actual width they are exactly the same. In fact, the Honor screen longer than it is on the cutout size — and therefore the fundamental difference in the number displayed on the information screen you will find, and choosing between these models, or diagonal dimensions of the case is not necessary to navigate.
As for picture quality, here, too, more or less the same, but there are nuances. For example, the screen of Honor brighter, but the contrast it has less — and all because he’s black at least… ahem… black.
Colors a little more saturated from Honor (the eye is not notice, only colorimeter), but it was enough to call them oversaturated. Therefore, the deviation from the preset colors (DeltaE) above — Honor a little stretching the truth with the accuracy of the color reproduction.
But Xiaomi with the default settings, the screen behaves very strange. Auto-contrast adjustment, the picture “floats” depending on the light, which is why you sometimes feel like you drunk or smartphone, sorry “tube sat”..
Therefore, for the final test I set the settings in the “Standard” that has led indicators to normal and somehow at the same time perekrestila white color from the garage to a bluish to a more eye-pleasing value.
Test both smartphones run on Android 8.1 (at the time of publication of this material) and use proprietary interfaces.
New about latest to say nothing — of any Honor or Xiaomi last years “inside” looks the same exclusive features optional “not delivered”.
Performance and autonomy
Honor 8X Max runs on Snapdragon processor 660, Max and Xiaomi Mi 3 Snapdragon 636. There is, in General, and the figures are all clear — 660 model is more upbeat, it has a more powerful gaming graphics (vs Adreno Adreno 512 509), but the surprise was that the Huawei/Honor at least in some models is not vparivaet its Kirini, and selects Qualcomm. And that spacious body loation Snapdragon 660 more economical (and not as is usually the case on the example of the failure of autonomy in terms of mAh Xiaomi Mi A2 or ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2). But to this we shall return in a few paragraphs.
The main thing to note — Honor 8X the stock performance is indeed higher, but in practice, once notice is difficult. Moreover, not only in applications, but even in the games. In most games, both models show the same picture with the same frame rate (due to the modest resolution of Full HD, which graphics engine is not strained as he could). So to rely on the numbers of benchmarks in the choice between these two models, I would not.
Configuration smartphones are almost identical, except that, in Honor of 128 GB instead of 64 GB from Xiaomi. At the same time, remind you to expand the storage capacity of the memory card is more convenient to Honor — you will not have to give up the second SIM.
Both phones have maintained support FM radio, work with networks 802.11 ac Wi-Fi and location services GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou. But Xiaomi newer, faster and more economical Bluetooth.
Unfortunately, none of the test smartphones are not got NFC (and the possibility of paying with your smartphone instead of a credit card). If Xiaomi is quite a typical drawback, this is for Honor 8X is more than enough, in fact, in the “regular” Honor 8X this module is. It is clear that the prefix “Max” in the name refers to diagonal screen size, but still, the buyer accustomed to the fact that enhanced versions of flagships often have functionality, at least not worse, and “max” is associated with “maximum”. Would he Honor 8X Big — questions would not arise.
In General, though fingerprint scanners have Honor and Xiaomi, about Google Pay to forget. Most likely, the fact that Honor decided just “not to bother” with completion originally the Chinese model for low sales outside of China. Well, at least Honor 8X Max even started to sell in Russia, officially — at the end of 2018, the leadership Honor stated “in Europe and Russia, it will not buy” and put the phone to us officially refused.
Despite the fact that Honor 8X Max slightly faster than the Xiaomi Mi 3 Max, and it has less battery capacity (5000 mAh vs 5500 mAh), it works a little longer. But there are some interesting nuances.
During testing, both phones are almost first “nostril-in-nostril”. Somewhere closer to 60-70% of discharge Xiaomi Mi 3 Max is starting to pull ahead — that is, runs out of power quickly. But after 50% charge remaining, his Honor is almost catching up. Probably talking about the individual “curvature” calculation of charge of the battery (it is only in the numbers, percent linear and uniform, but the reality is a bit more complicated).
As you can see from the schedule, the movie is playing, both smartphones were the same. In games Xiaomi shows even a slightly better result — simply because of the lower ceiling of performance. But in read mode, the energy efficiency of older CPU in Honor prevails. Performance in this mode is irrelevant.
But the speed of charging, quite the opposite. Both smartphones support fast charging Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, but the Xiaomi Mi 3 gets the Max current through the USB Type-C. And, although the charging time is stretched not for half an hour, as Oppo RX17 Pro, and not even an hour and a half, like many of today’s flagships, still Mi 3 Max charge almost two times faster than 8X Max Honor. When charging from one tee regular adapters Xiaomi Mi 3 Max charged a little less than two and a half hours (with two hours charging 90%), and Honor 8X Max procrastinating nearly 4 hours. Partly the fact that micro-USB, though able to digest fast charging power 18 watts, but the 18 W is ready to pass through itself, not 100% of the charging time, and “sometimes” in order not to overheat. USB-C, which was designed later, there is no such restriction.
In General, for a smartphone with 5000+ mAh charging speed is not the last thing, because it is logical that if you increase the battery capacity and the charging time increases. Wait 4 hours of charging today, somehow not comme Il faut, in my opinion.
Cameras (all) — the weak spot and Xiaomi Mi 3 and Honor Max 8X Max, but if I had to choose between the two models only on the camera, then definitely I would take Xiaomi. Already “on paper” Saami looks cooler because of the camera it is taken from the explanatory state employees 5 Redmi Note/Redmi Note Pro 6 (main camera — Samsung S5K2L7). Where to get cameras for Honor — a good question. The Chinese, as usual, keep quiet about it (not to embarrass myself if it turns out that the sensor slapped “the surrender”), similar camera performance is in Honor 7X, but the other optics in it, so you never know…
Both smartphones have a mode “AI”, which, however, most of the photos either not doing anything or just increases the contrast and color. In General, it’s more of the “coloring” of the finished photo, rather than from some intellectual mode that is shooting.
Selfie camera of both smartphones, given the price, very bad. They do their job only in daylight. To get a decent selfie in the room very difficult.
Rear cameras, the situation is better. Day on the street, they give almost identical results, but indoors or in the dark Honor 8X Max far behind. The artificial tree in my apartment here, the most revealing. Note that both snapshot — mode AI (in normal mode, there is a complete nightmare). What does “thought” Honor 8X do not understand. Scene is very simple and, in theory, should advantageously show even a weak camera, but no.
Also Honor passes at night greatly decreases the sharpness of the image, out noises and other “dandruff” on the images. Xiaomi tries hard, although the leaders he was, of course, far away.
In General, the photo a definite leader — Xiaomi Mi 3 Max. With videos the situation is similar. Already characteristics it is obvious that the advantage of Xiaomi — it can shoot in 4K at 30 frames per second and at Full HD and 30 and 60 K/S. Honor 8X Max — 1080/30 is the “ceiling” of possibilities.
But the reality is not as good as I would like. Yes, 4K resolution is here and really enhances the sharpness, however, at the same time with the saturation of bright colors (red, orange, pink). But the 60 fps is solid marketing. Shooting at this frame rate, the feelings, being in a very low resolution — I assume somewhere around 720×480 pixels, and then stretched up to Full-HD. On the freeze frames you can even see the large pixels! In the end, sharpness is simply no, at night, and even continuous darkness — the only visible lights. Therefore, I do not cite examples of shooting in 60 fps — consider it in Max Xiaomi Mi 3 just yet. And 30 fps — Yes, the picture is better than Honor.
At night, the difference is particularly noticeable. Where Honor is a solid soap, Xiaomi, the picture is still acceptable.
Yet Xiaomi is stabilizing — it is enabled by default in the settings. In practice, it is better to be off — to sense from it a little, and the sharpness falls.
Also in 4K mode though Xiaomi makes an adequate record on the screen during shooting picture unpleasant “jumps”, if you are an alcoholic with trembling hands.
In any case, the cameras of both smartphones is rather weak even for blogging.
So, are phablets still popular, but not so much that they were sold in batches. With the selection of competitors for testing smartphones I’m having a big trouble here and he-Max Xiaomi Mi 3 officially, Russia doesn’t want to sell. In fact, of all the four devices (two test and two competitors) only 8X Max Honor you can officially buy in our country (and it’s nowhere other than the official store).
Honor Note 10
As we have seen, Honor 8X Max the functionality is inferior even Honor 8X — missing NFC. So if you need both this module and in General the flagship filling, but are interested in a large screen, it is possible to look in the direction of Honor Note 10. Officially in Russia it is not polite, but in a gray retail can be found at 26-30 thousand rubles. “Pitfalls” — typical of the smartphones that were made for China and then adapted for laovaev — incomplete set of 4G frequencies (almost everything is there, but is missing Band 20), the absence of a global firmware (there is only Chinese, who slapped Google Play artisan. Due to the artisanal modifying the firmware, you may experience some “glitches” with Google Pay. Update firmware all is also very bad — you either have cheap (an update to Android standard way), or go (Russian language and store with Google Play app). The third is not given.
Xiaomi Mi 2 Max
Yes, this model is even weaker than Mi Max 3, but it is much cheaper — about 9-10 thousand rubles for the version with 32 or 64 GB of memory. There is, of course, and the processor will be simpler and camera, but still with a USB port.
And Honor Max 8X Max and the Xiaomi Mi 3 is made for people who need a huge screen, but which don’t care about the camera, especially selfies and videos. NFC these people are also not useful. But the screens are really good. And almost the same.
On the side of Honor 8X Max — slightly higher performance and slightly almost — autonomy, as it is 128 GB of memory and you can put a memory card with vtoroi Simcoe. The main cons of Honor — a very long charge and obviously inflated official price.
Xiaomi Mi 3 Max with some unique positive qualities are not distinguished, except that the camera he is still better than Honor, and there is a USB connector.
I also note that all specifications and prices listed are for smartphones that was on the test. So, for example, and you Honor Max 8X grey retail find with 64 GB of memory at the same price as Xiaomi Mi 3 Max — 17 thousand rubles.
